Why Should You Use Organic Soaps
Organic and natural personal care products use more plant-based ingredients, and some carry the USDA Organic seal for their agricultural ingredients.[3] Many people prefer them for sustainability or ingredient preferences. But “organic” doesn’t mean hypoallergenic or safer for every skin type, and the FDA doesn’t define “natural” for cosmetics.[1][4] Cosmetics can’t legally claim to treat skin conditions like acne or eczema; products that do are regulated as drugs.[5]What’s Hiding In Your Regular Soap?
Read on.- Fragrance: It is not good for your skin and organs, be it one artificial fragrance or a cocktail of a hundred varieties. Period.
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): Its role in soap is to act as a surfactant and emulsifier.
Now that you know what to avoid let’s check what ingredients to look for. All-vegan ingredients: There are soaps with animal by-products like goat milk, honey, plant extracts, and fruit extracts. Organic oils: Soaps made from a single oil/fat or a handful of organic oils are available on the market. Look specifically for organic virgin coconut oil, organic olive oil, organic avocado oil, organic lavender oil, and more. Beeswax: Beeswax gives it a pleasant smell, besides adding hardness to the soap. Remember, it isn’t vegan! Organic Cocoa Butter: it is a powerhouse of moisture. Cocoa butter nourishes and protects the skin, too – all without stripping natural barriers. Shea Butter: Another moisturizing agent is present in organic soaps. Essential oils : Look for Cedarwood oil, Patchouli oil, Balsam Fir Needle oil on the label.
What the Research Says
The FDA doesn’t define “organic” or “natural” for cosmetics; a product can carry the USDA Organic seal only if its agricultural ingredients meet USDA standards.[3][1] Plant ingredients can still cause allergic reactions, and fragrance is a common cause of skin irritation.[6] Cosmetics can’t legally claim to treat or cure skin conditions; products that do are regulated as drugs.[5]How We Chose These Products
