What Shampoo Can and Can’t Do for Thinning Hair
- Many Causes – Thinning can be hereditary pattern hair loss or something that looks like it, so a dermatologist needs to rule out other causes first.[2]
- Shampoo Is a Cleanser – Shampoo sits on the scalp for a minute or two. It can remove oil and buildup so fine hair lifts at the roots, but it does not change how follicles grow hair.
- Biotin – Biotin deficiency can thin hair, but it is rare, and there is little evidence that biotin helps people who are not deficient.[3] A rinse-off shampoo adds even less.
- DHT Blockers – Saw palmetto, pumpkin seed and nettle are sold as DHT blockers. There is no good evidence that they work in a rinse-off shampoo.
What Dermatologists Use Instead
- Minoxidil – Topical minoxidil is sold without a prescription. In trials it reduced hair loss and helped hair grow, though full regrowth is unlikely.[1]
- Time – It takes about 6 to 12 months of daily use to see how well it works, and the benefit fades when you stop.[1][2]
- Side Effects – The most common is an irritated, itchy scalp. Women may see some hair growth on the face if the solution spreads.[2]
- Pregnancy – Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use minoxidil.[2]
What to Check on a Shampoo Label
- Organic Claim – The FDA does not define organic for cosmetics. A USDA Organic seal on a shampoo follows the USDA organic rules for its farm ingredients.[4][8]
- Other Organic Standards – NSF/ANSI 305 is a personal care standard for products that contain organic ingredients, which is the claim on Avalon Organics.
- Hypoallergenic – No federal standard defines hypoallergenic, so the word means whatever the company wants it to mean.[5]
- Fragrance – Check for essential oils and fragrance if you have a sensitive scalp.[6]

Dermatology guidance on thinning hair centers on medicines, not shampoo.
