Blankets and safe sleep
  • Keep blankets, quilts and other soft bedding out of the crib for babies under 12 months; they raise the risk of suffocation and SIDS.[1][2]
  • For warmth in the crib, use a wearable blanket or sleep sack instead.[1]
  • Use blankets only for supervised play, stroller rides and tummy time while your baby is awake.[1]
  • Stop swaddling once your baby shows signs of rolling over.[1]

Organic Vs. Non-Organic Baby Blankets

Organic blankets are made from organic cotton or other fibers grown under organic standards. A third-party label such as GOTS shows that the whole textile was checked, and OEKO-TEX tests for harmful substances in the finished fabric.[3][4] Fiber content claims on textiles also have to be accurate under FTC rules.[5] “Made in USA” claims must mean that all or virtually all of the product was made in the United States, so look for brands that state this clearly.[6] Organic fabrics don’t prevent illness, but many parents prefer them for comfort and sustainability.

Developmental Benefits of Baby Blankets

A blanket can be a familiar, comforting object for toddlers, and a soft blanket is useful for supervised tummy time on the floor. For babies under 12 months, keep blankets out of the crib and use a wearable blanket for sleep.[1] Don’t over-bundle: overheating is a risk factor for SIDS.[7]

Types of Baby Blankets

  • Swaddle blankets: Thin muslin or cotton blankets for swaddling newborns. Swaddle snugly but leave room at the hips, always place a swaddled baby on their back, and stop when your baby starts to roll.[1]
  • Receiving blankets: Light cotton blankets for holding, burping and covering a car seat or stroller.
  • Knit and quilt blankets: Warmer blankets for strollers, play mats and older toddlers.
  • Wearable blankets (sleep sacks): The AAP-recommended way to keep a baby warm in the crib.[1]

What the Research Says

The AAP recommends that babies sleep on their backs on a firm, flat surface with no soft bedding, including blankets, until at least 12 months.[1] CPSC warns that soft bedding in infant sleep spaces is a leading cause of suffocation deaths.[2] Certifications like GOTS and OEKO-TEX cover materials only, not sleep safety.[3][4]

How We Chose These Products

We don’t test products hands-on. We compared labels and listings: organic fiber claims and certifications [3][4], fabric weight, size, and washability. We removed products that were out of stock, no longer listed or recalled, and we checked the brands we list against recent CPSC [8] recall notices in October 2026. Brands don’t pay to be included, though we may earn a commission from purchases.
