Nowadays, there is a never-ending list of baby bath products out there. Many parents prefer simple formulas with fewer added ingredients. Organic baby shampoos are one option; what matters most is a mild, tear-free formula and, for sensitive skin, no fragrance.[1]

Baby shampoo basics
  • Babies need very little shampoo; once or twice a week is enough for most.[1]
  • For cradle cap, gently wash and brush the scalp; ask your pediatrician if it spreads or looks inflamed.[2]
  • Choose fragrance-free products for babies with eczema or sensitive skin.[3]

Nasty Chemicals To Look For In Baby Shampoos

Ingredient lists can be confusing, and some warnings online go further than the evidence:
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS): A strong cleanser that can irritate sensitive skin and eyes. It is not classified as a carcinogen; many baby shampoos simply use milder cleansers.
  • Fragrance: Fragrance mixes are a common cause of skin allergies, so fragrance-free is the safest choice for sensitive skin.[4]
  • Parabens: Preservatives that the FDA says it has no evidence are harmful as used in cosmetics.[5]
  • Formaldehyde releasers: Some preservatives release small amounts of formaldehyde and can cause allergic reactions; many brands avoid them.[6]
  • Phthalates: The FDA keeps phthalates in cosmetics under review.[7]

Benefits of Using Organic Baby Shampoos

Organic baby shampoos usually use plant-based cleansers and organic plant extracts. “Organic” isn’t an FDA-defined term for cosmetics unless the agricultural ingredients meet USDA standards.[8] Plant-based shampoos can still cause reactions, and no shampoo makes hair grow faster. Many come in tear-free and 2-in-1 shampoo-and-wash formulas, which can be handy at bath time.

Key Ingredients In a Natural Organic Baby Shampoo

Common ingredients include vegetable glycerin (a moisturizer), plant oils such as sunflower, coconut or jojoba, shea butter, and extracts like calendula, chamomile or aloe. For babies, skip shampoos with tea tree or other strong essential oils.[3]

What the Research Says

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping baby skin care simple: lukewarm water, a small amount of mild, fragrance-free cleanser, and a fragrance-free moisturizer for dry skin.[1][3] “Organic” and “natural” on a cosmetic are not FDA-defined terms, and plant ingredients can cause allergic reactions too.[8][9] Some ingredient concerns are real but often overstated: the FDA says it has no evidence that parabens as used in cosmetics are harmful, and it continues to review phthalates and fragrance ingredients.[5][7][4] No skin product prevents SIDS; safe sleep practices do.[10]

How We Chose These Products

We don’t test products hands-on. We compared labels and listings: tear-free and fragrance-free formulas, the USDA Organic seal on ingredients [11], size and price. We removed products that were out of stock, no longer listed or recalled, and we checked the brands we list against recent FDA [12] recall notices in October 2026. Brands don’t pay to be included, though we may earn a commission from purchases.
