Iodine is one of the most important minerals required by the body in small amounts. It controls the thyroid functions as well as the body’s metabolism. In “organic” iodine supplements, the organic claim covers plant ingredients such as kelp; minerals like potassium iodide aren’t farm products and can’t themselves be certified organic.[1] But you will not have to dig for the best iodine supplements because we have already compiled them. You may also look at the benefits, interactions, and essential notes on Iodine intake.

Iodine safety
  • Adults need 150 mcg a day; the upper limit is 1,100 mcg. Too much iodine can cause thyroid problems.[2]
  • Kelp and seaweed supplements can contain much more iodine than the label says.[3]
  • If you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid, heart or blood pressure medicines, talk to your doctor first.[3]
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women need more iodine; ask your doctor about a prenatal vitamin with iodine.[2]

Benefits of Organic Iodine Supplement

Iodine is a mineral the thyroid needs to make hormones that control metabolism and help babies’ bones and brains develop during pregnancy and infancy.[2] Most people in the U.S. get enough iodine from iodized salt, dairy, seafood and eggs.[2] Supplements may help people who don’t use iodized salt, eat no dairy or seafood, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. They don’t help weight loss or energy if your iodine is already adequate.[3]

Possible Iodine interactions to stay aware of

Iodine supplements can interact with some medicines:
  • Antithyroid medicines: Iodine taken with methimazole can cause hypothyroidism.[3]
  • ACE inhibitors and ARBs: These blood pressure medicines can raise potassium, and potassium iodide adds more.[3]
  • Potassium-sparing diuretics: Same potassium concern.[3]

Additional Information about Iodine Intake

Both too little and too much iodine can cause goiter and thyroid problems.[2] The RDA for adults is 150 mcg, rising to 220 mcg in pregnancy and 290 mcg while breastfeeding. Kelp supplements vary widely in iodine content, so choose products that list a measured amount.[3][4]

What the Research Says

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements says most Americans get enough iodine, and warns that kelp products can deliver large, variable amounts.[3] The American Thyroid Association and CDC also note that iodine needs rise during pregnancy.[5]

How We Chose These Products

We don’t test products hands-on. We compared labels and listings: the form and dose per serving compared with the NIH Recommended Dietary Allowance, third-party testing, whether ingredients carry the USDA Organic seal [1], and price per serving. We removed products that were out of stock, no longer listed or recalled, and we checked the brands we list against recent FDA [6] recall notices in October 2026. In our October 2026 review we removed Pure Horizon IOPlus, which provides 12.5 mg (12,500 mcg) of iodine per tablet, more than 11 times the adult upper limit, and Horbäach and Life-flo drops, whose listings make no organic claim. Brands don’t pay to be included, though we may earn a commission from purchases.
